Chapter 1 Volume: cubic metres (m³), dm³ and cm³

This chapter describes how to calculate the volume of something. If you have to know the volume of a large box it goes as follows. You measure the length, width and the height of the box. You need this information to calculate the volume of the box. In this chapter you will learn how to calculate the volume.

01. John works in the warehouse.
He has to pile the boxes up like this (see drawing)

How many boxes are there now in total ?____________ boxes.

02. John has placed the boxes against the wall. The wall is completely covered with a pile of boxes.
He now places a second pile of boxes in front of it.
After that he places another pile of boxes in front of this.
In total, John places 3 piles of boxes in front of the wall.

How many boxes are there now in total ?____________ boxes.

03. a. How many blocks does this construction consist of ?

Explanation
To calculate the volume of something, we multiply the surface by the height.
Or more concisely: Volume is surface times height.
As a formula: I = o x h.

Explanation
This is a block with a length and a width of 1 centimetre.
The height of the block is also 1 centimetre.

You calculate the volume with the formula length times width times height.
The volume of the block is 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm = 1 cubic centimetre
(1 cm³).

A block with a length, width and height of 1 centimetre is called a cubic centimetre. We write it like this: 1 cm³.

A block with a length, width and height of 1 decimetre is a cubic decimetre. We write it like this: 1 dm³.

A large block with a length, width and height of 1 meter is a cubic meter. We write it like this: 1 m³.

You calculate the volume of an object by multiplying the length, width and height. A ³ is then placed with the unit.

11. This is a construction of blocks.
The blocks have a volume of 1 cm³.

Calculate the volume of this block construction.

The volume of this construction is ________ cubic
centimetres (cm³)

12. On the bottom of the box, blocks of 1 cm³ have been drawn.

Fill the box.
5 layers of blocks of 1 cm³ will fit in the box on top of each other.

What is the volume when the box is full?

The volume of a full box is ________ cubic centimetres (cm³)

13. To the right you can see the drawing of a small box.
The length of the box is 6 centimetres.
The width is 3 centimetres.
The height is 4 centimetres.

What is the volume of the box?

The volume is ________ cubic centimetres (cm³).

14. To the right you can see the drawing of a chest.
The sizes are in centimetres.

What is the volume of the chest?

The volume is ________ cubic centimetres (cm³).

15. To the right you can see the drawing of a chest.
The sizes are in decimetres.

What is the volume of the chest?

The volume is ________ cubic centimetres (cm³).

16. Calculate the volume of a box with the following sizes:
the length is 60 cm, the width is 40 cm and the height is 30 cm.

The volume is ________ cubic centimetres (cm³).

17. Calculate the volume of a box with the following sizes:
the length is 6 dm, the width is 4 dm and the height is 4 dm.

The volume is ________ cubic decimetres (dm³).

18. Calculate the volume of a box with the following sizes:
the length is 60 cm, the width is 40 cm and the height is 35 cm.

The volume is ________ cubic centimetres (cm³).

19. Calculate the volume of a box with the following sizes:
the length is 8 dm, the width is 5 dm and the height is 3.5 dm.

The volume is ________ cubic decimetres (dm³).
