  • to give adults the opportunity of improving and supplementing their basic skills according to reading, spelling and communicating in writing (plus numeracy)
  • to provide prerequisites for further education and participation in the society and exerting an influence on one’s own situation.

Formal Adult Education (AVU), equivalent to lower secondary level, is a single-subject education for adults in general subjects. Formal means aiming at professional skills as well as personal development.

Higher Prepatory Examination (HF), equivalent to general upper secondary education, preparing students for further and higher education

VUC Vestsjælland Syd has about 1.000?? students per year and 38?? teachers.

Adult Education in Denmark is based on adult students’ perception and experience, and each subject, each class, each course is adjusted to the students’ background, their needs and requirements.

The curriculum is centrally designed, but the students play an active part in their own classes. Planning and organization, including the choice of teaching methods and learning materials, must as far as possible take place as a collaboration between teacher and students.

The single-subject structure makes the provision of a comprehensive approach to each subject, offering specialized knowledge and skills as well as cohesion, vital.

ISSA, founded in 1963, is an institute dependent on the University of Navarra and was the first University College in Spain to impart training for management assistants at tertiary level. English and French or German are compulsory subjects during the three-year course. A multilingual model has been introduced this year, 2004-05, which will allow students to study 60% of the diploma in other languages. Personalized attention is given to help them acquire and improve skills and competences required in the workplace. All graduates are eligible to use ISSA’s work placement service throughout their professional life.

A high percentage of students take advantage of Erasmus exchange programmes with centres in six other European countries. The Institute has also been involved in several European projects dealing with on-line collaborative learning. Through an agreement with SUNY, State University of New York, graduates of ISSA may continue their studies to obtain a diploma in Business Administration at Tompkins Cortland Community College, or a degree in International Business at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

ISSA is situated in San Sebastián, capital of Guipúzcoa, on the coast of the Cantabrian Sea and 18 kilometres from the French border. Among other aspects, San Sebastián, or Donostia, as it is known in Euskera, is famous for its shell-shaped beach, La Concha”, its film festival and its gastronomic delights.
