Project summary

All partners have identified the lack of ICT familiarity and the need for short-term courses for teachers and trainers. The objectives of COLTT are to help teachers overcome their difficulties in the use of ICT for cross-national collaborative communication by teaching them how to work in on-line-based collaborative learning environments.

Teachers of adults will be able to offer their students a completely different way of learning New Basic Skills in collaboration with students from other countries, in formal and non-formal educational institutions. The project will achieve these objectives through developing:

  1. The COLTT training course: “How to work on a web-based platform with a view to integrating ICT in collaborative teaching and learning – preferably across borders.” The training course will include a pre-workshop event, the training course itself and a post-workshop session. The project includes a test-run and two Grundtvig 3 courses.
  2. A handbook in both printed format and virtual on how to implement ICT-based collaborative learning in classroom activities.
  3. An introduction to electronic logbooks, which will record discussions, points learned and agreements reached.
  4. An international conference at which the results of the project will be presented.
  5. A Home Page to disseminate the findings from the project.

Our objectives are therefore

  • to collect the experiences of educators that have been involved in ICT-based collaborative learning
  • to compile a handbook for teachers and trainers on how to implement ICT-based collaborative learning in short term class-room based activities
  • to validate this handbook through its use in a series of Grundtvig 3 courses
  • to ensure the dissemination of these results through the inclusion of Grundtvig 3 courses in the course offer of different European institutions

At the end of the project period COLTT will be presented at an international conference focusing on:

  • collaborative learning
  • task based learning
  • autonomous learning and the use of electronic logbooks

Target Groups

Directly the target group is teachers and teacher trainers in adult education, who will be able to increase their familiarity with on-line-based collaborative learning and initiate both national and international activities for their students.

The teachers will:

  • be trained to become spearheads for teaching their learners to work collaboratively
  • become role models for colleagues in own institutions
  • be able to offer to their students a completely different way of learning New Basic Skills

The end users are the learners, who will benefit in a number of ways:

  • they will be introduced to a completely different learning environment
  • they will increase their skills in intercultural communication
  • they will have the opportunity to generally increase their New Basic Skills through motivating and user-friendly learning activities.

Activities

The topic for a COLTT training course will be: “How to work on a web-based platform with a view to integrating ICT in collaborative teaching and learning – preferably across borders”.

The working language will be English, but every script for the COLTT short-term collaborative learning activities can easily be adapted into any other language.

The project plans to develop training courses for teachers that will include:

  • how to use Internet-based platforms for collaborative learning
  • how to chose a platform – what demands to make
  • how to adapt existing models to local needs
  • how to organize the educational activity and the didactic approach
  • how to motivate learners for Internet-based communication
  • how to improvise solutions and implement a flexible approach
  • how to monitor ICT-based activities in a way that empowers the individual learner
  • how to use logbooks in teaching
