MiA, Mathematics in Action, is a European project funded by the Grundtvig 1 action, within the framework of the Socrates programme. The partner institutions come from Denmark, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Spain and Hungary.The project aims at investigating alternative ways in which adults can learn basic mathematics, especially in out-of-school situations, supported and coached by teachers in/from adult learning centres.

INULIS (Improving Numerical Literacy Skills) is a content development oriented project aiming to create a testing service for the vocational training on quantitative literacy. The core principle of INULIS is that effective quantitative skills are basic horizontal skills of vital importance for European workers and employees in most sectors, in order to fully exploit their potential and develop their career.

AMADA (Assessment of Math Knowledge Deficiencies of Adult Learners with Socio-economic Disadvantages) is a SOCRATES funded European project which aims to equip math adult educators with a systematic diagnostic methodology for assessing the level of quantitative skills of individuals. AMADA started on the 1st of October 2005 and has a duration of 24 months.

ALNET was a project within the Socrates programme in the Minerva action - Open Distance Learning. It was run in the period 2001-2003. The aim of the project was to implement a model for digital mathematics literacy.


Important and relevant networks

The International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, abbreviated to PME, is a group of researchers. The group was established in 1976 at ICME3 in Karlsruhe. PME is affiliated as subgroup to the ICMI, the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction. PME is affiliated with ICMI (International Commission on Mathematics Instruction) and as such presents itself during its conferences (ICME) in which it aims and activities can be discussed with non members.

Adults Learning Mathematics - a Research Forum
ALM is an international research forum bringing together researchers and practitioners in adult mathematics/numeracy teaching and learning in order to promote the learning of mathematics by adults.


CIEAEM Since its foundation in 1950, the Commission for the Study and Improvement of Mathematics Teaching (CIEAEM) intended to investigate the actual conditions and the possibilities for the development of mathematics education in order to improve the quality of teaching mathematics.

Communication from the Commission
Adult learning: It is never too late to learn

The European Commission adopted a Communication calling on the Member States to promote adult learning in Europe. The pressures of demographic change, globalisation and the emergence of newly industrialised and highly competitive countries mean that adult learning must be placed firmly on the political agenda. To do so, the Commission will work with the Member States to produce an Action Plan on Adult Learning in 2007. This aims to support European adult education, with high quality information, guidance and assessment systems, excellent learning content and delivery mechanisms.


TSG6: Adult and lifelong mathematics education
At the 10th International Congress on Mathematics Education, Topic Study Group 6 gathered a group of participants who were interested in important new trends and developments in research or practice related to the topic "Adult and lifelong mathematics education", from a variety of perspectives.
At TSG's website, under Papers and Discussion Documents, you will find 20 peer-reviewed papers presenting an overview of the current state-of-the-art in the topic, and expositions of significant recent contributions to it, as seen from international perspectives.
